International Conference on Primary Health Care (ICPHC)

As a leading facilitator of health financing reforms in Ethiopia—and stronger health systems worldwide—Abt is pleased to sponsor this year’s conference, Resilient Primary Health Care: The Foundation of Universal Health Coverage In The Era of Sustainable Development Goals.

Abt will host a panel discussion on health care financing and moderate another discussion on civic engagement (details below). Please also visit our booth to discuss approaches and opportunities with our staff from Ethiopia and the US.

A Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Community Approach to Sustainable Health Care Financing
September 7, 2-3 pm EAT

Achieving universal health coverage means reaching the poorest and most vulnerable members of society with quality health services that meet their needs—and which they can access without undertaking financial burdens. Ethiopia has undertaken a series of health financing reforms to achieve this vision, and about 57 million Ethiopians (half the population) are now enrolled in the country’s community-based health insurance. However, ongoing financial sustainability of these innovations requires better alignment and coordination with the government-wide provision and financing of priority health services and social health insurance as well as with private sector providers in Ethiopia. This session will review health financing reforms in Ethiopia to date and discuss remaining challenges. Panelists will ask the audience to reflect on lessons from Ethiopia and other countries that might influence each other.
