A new article in Nature examines rising global obesity rates and disputes the view that urbanization is the most important driver behind rates. The authors used 2,009 population-based studies, including body-mass index measurements (BMI) of more than 112 million adults to show that increases in BMI among adults from rural areas played a larger role in global increases than rises in urban areas did. With these trends uncovered, authors call for more integrated approaches to rural nutrition that enhances financial and physical access to healthy foods.
