The multi-donor AgResults initiative is testing “pay-for-results” prize competitions to encourage creation and strengthening of sustainable markets for technologies that benefit small farmers. Abt Global helps advance AgResults’ learning agenda by conducting rigorous external evaluations of each competition and synthesizing the results. The evaluation of the Nigeria Aflasafe Challenge Project found that the competition led to the creation of a niche market for Aflasafe-treated maize and an increase in net income from maize among the smallholder farmers the project reached.
