Adedayo Oduola

Chief of Party, PMI Evolve Project, Nigeria

Bio

Adedayo Oduola is a public health entomologist with more than two decades of experience in Nigeria in malaria vector control programs in development institutions, research institutes, and academia. He has worked on malaria projects of national significance funded by the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, the European Union, and the private sector. As a senior lecturer at the University of Ilorin, his passion for ensuring a well-trained vector control workforce led to a WHO capacity-strengthening grant that enabled him to train and mentor 23 entomologists from across the country.

Oduola currently serves as the chief of party (COP) for the PMI Evolving Vector Control to Fight Malaria Project (PMI Evolve) in Nigeria, where he manages relationships with the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) and its partners in the fight against malaria. He is responsible for annual and longitudinal entomological evaluations that guide vector control decisions to protect over 68 million people in Nigeria. He leads a country team composed of 13 staff members. He supervises 12 principal investigators from universities working across 12 states and 76 local government areas in Nigeria. Under his leadership, the project is strengthening local capacity across the country to implement vector control programs. His work with the NMEP has helped scale up vector surveillance activities in the country, including a surveillance project for the Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes in seven states. Oduola also helped start a community-based surveillance pilot in Bauchi and Oyo State and hopes to expand this project to more local governments. He co-chairs the national vector surveillance and indoor residual spray expert group, where he provides technical guidance and leadership to review technical reports, proposals, and guidelines of national importance.

Before PMI Evolve, Oduola served as the COP in Nigeria for the USAID funded PMI VectorLink project. Under his leadership, the project conducted a larval source management feasibility study in Kebbi state and supported a study to monitor the epidemiological and entomological impact of new insecticide treated nets in Ebonyi, Kebbi, and Sokoto States.

Before joining Abt, Oduola was a research fellow and senior lecturer at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research and the University of Ilorin, where he worked on a variety of projects. They included the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria project, a joint initiative to build the capacity of Nigeria’s vector research and control personnel sponsored by UNICEF, UNDP, the World Bank, and the WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases. He was a co-investigator for the evaluation of the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets and other malaria control interventions funded by Vestergaard Frandsen SA. As a field entomologist, he was involved in the implementation and monitoring of the European Network for Advance Research on Olfaction of Malaria Transmitting Insect Control project. The project focused on the interruption of malaria transmission through the applied knowledge of mosquito-host attraction, recognition, and behavior.
