Mbogo Bunyi is a development professional with more than 20 years of experience working in global health and private sector engagement in East Africa. As a technical advisor, he has worked closely with national and sub-national governments, corporations, and development partners to improve health outcomes. He has facilitated key public-private partnerships to overcome obstacles to private-sector participation, building stronger health markets for family planning and HIV in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. Bunyi has supported innovative solutions in health financing, private investment for social enterprises, and health care policy.
On SHOPS Plus, Bunyi brought together 60 key public and private partners to build consensus on a market for HIV self-test kits and condoms in Uganda. He facilitated a change in policy in Rwanda to allow pharmacists to administer injectable contraceptives. He engaged public and private sector partners to increase access to health services in Kenya, working with Twinings and other local partners. On the SHOPS Project, Bunyi also led the introduction of healthcare information technology innovations. They lowered the cost of health insurance and facilitated support for social enterprises with grants and technical assistance to finance and scale social enterprises.
Bunyi held several high-level positions at PSI Kenya. As the director for social franchising, he coordinated with two regional teams. He managed the integration of new health services into the franchise, which previously provided only family planning. He also improved efficiencies through a ranking system that identified well performing facilities that could benefit from additional investments and low performing ones that should be separated. He introduced financing options and a quality improvement model. As the director of maternal and child health, he developed partnerships and implemented a pilot to increase access to first line anti-malarial treatment through the private sector. That resulted in increased community access from 4 percent to 7 percent. He also coordinated the national distribution of 2.2 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets annually to pregnant women and children under one.
