HIGHLIGHTS
- The American Cancer Society wants context descriptions of COP sites.
- We created data visualizations linking public data and COP sites.
- Abt delivered visually appealing and informative baseline profiles and action plans.
The Challenge
The American Cancer Society (ACS) is engaged in the Health Systems Capacity Building initiative that supports 21 Community of Practice (COP) health systems working to expand screening for colorectal and breast cancer and vaccination for human papillomavirus (HPV). ACS wanted to develop an infographic for each COP site to highlight key contextual variables. The challenge was how to display cancer burden and local social determinants of health for each site.
The Approach
Using universal design and health literacy principles, Abt researched and created tailored community profiles. We provided key information on the ACS initiative with easy-to-understand graphics displaying cancer incidence and mortality, screening rates, and local social determinants of health data by local health service area. With Abt’s technical and communications expertise, the team used innovative data visualization techniques to combine both state and Health Services Area- level data to describe the context and work of each COP site.
The Results
The Abt team created visually appealing, informative, and easy-to-understand community profiles that provide a quick snapshot of key indicators of social determinants of health, as well as indicators for breast, colorectal, and cervical prevention, incidence, and mortality. These community profiles provide helpful context for COP leaders and stakeholders in developing yearly action plans to continue their work with ACS.
